At the start of September a case of bluetongue virus was detected in a cattle herd in Co. Wexford. Not long after another case was detected elsewhere in the State.
Northern Ireland remains free from confirmed cases this season so far. It is regarded as one of the most significant animal health challenges facing the livestock sector this year.
Even without cases in N.I farmers are already feeling the knock-on effects . Restrictions across parts of GB have made livestock movements more complicated. Farmers are advised if they notice anything unusual they should call the vet or DAERA straight away.
