The strengthening of the El Niño weather system will bring wetter and warmer-than-normal weather this autumn, with an increased risk of flooding, the Met Office said.
El Niño happens when the temperatures at the surface in the Pacific Ocean rises above average – with a knock-on effect for the UK's weather.
This year will see one of the most powerful ever occurrences, but Met Office chief meteorologist Ian Lisk said: "While this [year] may become one of the strongest El Niño events on record, that does not automatically mean more severe impacts for the UK."
