A Mushroom Innovation Day, hosted by Teagasc Horticulture Development Department, took place on Wednesday, 6 May at the Ashtown Research Centre in Dublin. There were some big names from the international mushroom industry in attendance on the day, as well as all the homegrown talent.
Attendees were treated to practical displays of advancements in the local industry and talks from local mushroom industry personnel and scientific bods as well as presentations from international visitors such as Rick Deryx (GTL/Limbraco), Sean O’Connor (4AG), Alan Edwards (Mushroom Machine), Jan-Emiel Tack (TLT Automation), and Stefan Glibetic (Myconics). There was plenty to learn and see at the event, including a tour of the Teagasc Mushroom Research Unit hosted by Dr. Eoghan Corbett, Dr. Joy Clarke and Brian McGuinness.
Dr. Lael Walsh, Senior Research Officer with Teagasc, delivered a presentation on sustainability with regard to business, sustainability and innovation.
“Automation and peat-free production are the next big changes,” according to Donal Gernon, a Teagasc Mushroom Specialised Advisor. No doubt there was plenty to take in, on all fronts, during the day.
