Ireland's Winter was wetter and warmer than average for the sixth season in a row. Average rainfall was 113 per cent of the norm. However it was only the 17th wettest winter since records began.
In the UK Mike Kendon, a senior scientist at the Met Office, said that while this winter did not break any national records for rainfall, it would be remembered for its “relentless rain as much as its intensity”.
He added: “A near-continuous run of Atlantic systems over the past three months has brought persistent rain, damaging storms and few dry spells.”
Wales has also seen 14 per cent more rain than average and Northern Ireland has seen a 25 per cent increase.
