Teagasc has published a new series of 'Enterprise Roadmaps' looking forward to 2030 across seven agricultural enterprise areas. The documents provide an update to the previous version (published in 2020) and are a “best estimate projection” of where each sector is headed.
Like all forecasts though outside factors can skew things, think of the war on Ukraine which knocked a lot of predictions of course. Currently with the conflagration in the Middle East all predictions made before that outbreak become moot.
The mushroom sector outlook is summarised thus: “The sector has consolidated significantly in recent years and currently faces two key challenges, (1) a transition away from peat casing and (2) integration of automated picking systems into the production system. These technology adoptions are significant and will require significant capital to realise. Both will likely challenge overall yields but should reduce the reliance on labour, stabilise the production base and improve the sustainability of the sector.”
