The Ig Nobels will be held in Europe for the first time because the US is “unsafe” for scientists to visit, organisers say.

The awards, for achievements “that first make people laugh, then make them think”, will be held on September 3 in Zurich.

The winners last year included scientists who painted zebra stripes on cows to ward off flies.
