This January was the wettest in Ireland since 2018 according to Met Eireann. There have been plenty of flood events especially down the east of the country to confirm that it was an exceptionally wet month.
Meteorologists blame the jet stream for pushing bands of wind and rain over the Atlantic to batter the UK and Ireland.
Rainfall in parts was up to three times the norm, with some areas experiencing a month's rainfall in less than a day.
Katesbridge in County Down has had 40 days of rain since the start of the year, as we go to press. With those types of rainfall on already sodden ground, flooding is nigh on inevitable. Mushroom areas in the country were also affected, Monaghan and Wexford. It is hoped that industry players were not too badly affected.
Forecasters predict that the inclement weather is set to continue into the middle of March.
