With headline rates of inflation falling in the EU, it was interesting to note that the price of basic food is rising at more than double the rate of inflation according to the Irish CSO.
THe Central Statistics Office latest flash estimate of consumer prices show that although annualised rate stood at 1.7 percent, within the unprocessed food category there was an annualised increase of 5.8 percent - more than twice the overall rate of inflation.
Unprocessed foods include meat, poultry, dairy products, eggs, fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and cereals.
The figures go some way to explaining what can only be called ‘till shock’ - that OMG moment when you’re paying for the groceries and the bill makes your jaw drop as you scour the receipt looking for which items were costing so much.
