The Irish Farmers Journal reported that Mushroom growers were seeking changes to the straw scheme. Changes to the Straw Incorporation Measure (SIM) will lead to a loss of jobs in the Irish mushroom sector, according to Irish Farmers Association (IFA).
"It's making mushroom compost more expensive, the growers less competitive in the UK and basically contributing to the closures that are happening routinely," said horticulture chair Mark Walsh.
Mushroom producers reportedly have had to import straw from the UK or Spain for three of the last six seasons.
The straw issue is one that raises its head every year. A perennial problem that persists.
